Karl August von Schauroth , from 1801 Freiherr von Schauroth , (born May 15, 1755 in Großgestewitz , † May 1, 1810 in Prague ) was an Austrian equestrian general .

origin

Schauroth came from a Thuringian - Saxon noble family and was born on the Großgestewitz manor in the Electorate of Saxony . His parents were Gottlob von Schauroth (* March 13, 1719; † November 11, 1775) and his wife Sophie Dorothea von Berbisdorf († October 11, 1801)

Life

In 1771, like his grandfather, he joined the Austrian army . In the War of the First Coalition , he distinguished himself in 1793 in the Austrian Netherlands as a Major in the Dragoon - Regiment " Prince Coburg " from. In 1798 he was promoted to colonel and commanded the 10th Hussar Regiment . In the same year Schauroth set up the hussar regiment No. 7 from sub-formations of this and other regiments and became its commander. With this regiment he took part in the battles near Verona and Magnano , where he was wounded, in 1799 and 1800 , as well as in the battle of Marengo . In the same year Schauroth commanded a brigade to cover the Adige Valley and was promoted to major general.

Appointed field marshal lieutenant in February 1809 , Schauroth led the cavalry of the 7th Corps in the campaign against the Duchy of Warsaw in April 1809 under the command of Archduke Ferdinand Karl von Este . During the Battle of Raszyn , Schauroth, at the head of a mixed observation force on the extreme left Austrian wing, clashed with Polish cavalry, who were superior in several ways but were inexperienced in combat . He was able to keep them from attacking by deceptive maneuvers until reinforcement from the center removed the danger of rolling up . In the otherwise catastrophic course of the campaign for Austria , Schauroth managed to recapture large parts of western and eastern Galicia , including Lviv , with an offensive over the Vistula and San as leader of a mounted corps , until he had to retreat into Bukovina in July from the invading Russians . After the Znojmo armistice , he commanded the 7th Corps from August to November 1809 as the successor to Lieutenant Field Marshal Mondet .

As a superior, Schauroth embodied the soldier's father . His methods of dealing with fraudulent military suppliers - so Schauroth forced such a man to eat a loaf of his rotten bread in front of the soldiers - earned him the assonant nickname " suction robe" in the army . On the occasion of his thirty-year service anniversary, he had received the title of baron in 1801 .

family

Schauroth was married to Franziska von Heslowa (* 1771; † December 20, 1853). The couple had two children:
