Louis Ferdinand de Mondet , also Ludwig Ferdinand von Mondet , (born October 18, 1748 in Ronse , † December 13, 1819 in Graz ) was an Austrian general during the coalition wars.

Life

Mondet was of bourgeois origin, he came from a respected Walloon family from Ronse in the Austrian Netherlands . 1766 Mondet entered the domestic Dragoon - Regiment Saint-Ignon one of the Austrian army. In the First Coalition War , he distinguished himself as a major in a battle near Nassogne in 1790 , for which he received the Order of Maria Theresa . After further successes, promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1793 , Mondet took over command of "his" regiment in September 1796 as a reward for his service in the battle of Würzburg, which was victorious for Austria on September 3, 1796, which was now called Latour after the new owner . In the same year Mondet was ennobled .

In the rank of colonel since 1797 , Mondet contributed to the Austrian victory in the Battle of Stockach during the Second Coalition War and was promoted to major general in January 1800 . After he was appointed Lieutenant Field Marshal in 1808 , Mondet took command of the Graz Fortress .

When Archduke Ferdinand von Este assembled the 7th Corps for the campaign against the Duchy of Warsaw in the spring of 1809 , he appointed Mondet to lead the infantry . After various failures, Ferdinand had to retreat with the bulk of the corps to the decisive theater of war Moravia at the beginning of July and handed over the command to Mondet. At the head of the remaining troops, Mondet delivered the Polish commander-in-chief Józef Antoni Poniatowski, who was pushing over the Vistula , in a successful battle of retreat near Jedlińsk , not far from Radom . A few days later, Mondet negotiated an armistice with the commander of the Polish vanguard for the purpose of evacuating and surrendering the old Polish capital Krakow on July 15.

As a result , a serious rift arose between the "allied" Russians and Poles on the night of July 15th because of the coup d' état by Russian troops . While the Polish side attributed its snub to an agreement between Mondet and the Russians, German journalists saw the event as a mistake by ambitious Russian subordinates. In command of the 7th Corps, Mondet was replaced by Lieutenant Field Marshal Schauroth in August 1809 .

After the end of the war in October 1809, he retired, which he spent in Graz. He was married to Annette de Haulleville from Ronse.
