Udo I of Thuringia (* around 1090; † after September 8, 1148 in the Mediterranean) was Bishop of Naumburg from 1125 to 1148 .

Life

Udo was the fourth son of Count Ludwig der Springer in Thuringia and Adelheid von Stade. Adelheid was the widow of Count Palatine Friedrich III. von Sachsen, her father was Lothar Udo II. or III., Count von Stade , Margrave of the Nordmark , approx. 1060–1110. Udo stood on the side of the Staufer , was elected according to the Worms Concordat and ordained in the spring of 1125 by Rudgar von Veltheim in his office as Bishop of Naumburg-Zeitz .

As an imperial prince , Udo was often near Emperor Lothar III. to meet and supported Konrad III. at his choice. For this he received a forest adjacent to Naumburg in 1138. Conrad III. he also supported in the following power struggles. Udo settled Dutch people in the bishopric , granted the Neuwerk monastery Halle duty-free in Zeitz , Naumburg and Teuchern, and reached a settlement with Margrave Konrad von Querfurt about the monastery bailiff. So he transferred goods in Tröglitz and Oelsen to the Zeitz Monastery and transferred inherited property to the Hochstift.

As a bishop he took part in the celebrations for the elevation of the bones of Bishop Godehard of Hildesheim , had Pope Innocent II confirm the relocation of the bishopric from Zeitz to Naumburg, restored the church in Altkirchen , took part in the funeral of Margrave Konrad, founded the Magdalenen Hospital and handed it over to his Pforta Cistercian abbey, founded in 1132 . Above all, the settlement in the Pleißenland was in the foreground and he campaigned for the expansion of the goods of the diocese .

In 1140 he was also given duties as regent in Thuringia . In 1145 he went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem with the margrave Konrad von Meissen , where he arrived in May 1145. In September 1145 he was back in his home country.

In 1147 he took together with Konrad III. participated in the Second Crusade to the Holy Land. The ways of Konrad III parted. and Udo. Udo traveled through Italy and was allowed by Pope Eugene III. confirm all rights for the diocese of Naumburg. Under the leadership of Otto von Freising , he experienced the defeat at Laodikeia in December 1147 , which ended with devastation. As a survivor, he reached Akkon in 1148 , where he joined the army of Conrad III. connected. After a visit to Jerusalem and the failure of the siege of Damascus , he began the return journey by sea on September 8, 1148, as did the king and the rest of the German contingent of the crusader army. Udo's ship sank in the Mediterranean during the crossing .
