history

The baroque moated castle was built in the 17th century after the previous structure was destroyed in 1397. It served as the seat of the lords of Balgstädt until the land reform in the Soviet occupation zone . The original wooden structure was created by Hans Friedrich Heßler. A renovation from 1744 by the owner Ernst Sperling gave the building its present appearance.

The two Vorwerke Toppendorf and Rödel belonged to the manor Balgstädt. In 1750 the mansion was converted into a hereditary knightly estate. The Balgstädt patrimonial court, which was located in the castle until it was dissolved in 1849, also included the villages of Großesnitz and towns.

In the 19th century, a park surrounded by a moat was built to the northwest.

Today the building houses the community office, a children's facility and the office of the leisure and tourism association Balgstädt eV
