Heinrich August von Helldorf , since 1844 Freiherr von Helldorff (born February 7, 1794 in Nödlitz , † December 7, 1862 in Weißenfels ) was a Prussian major general and is considered a hero in the Napoleonic Wars of Liberation .

origin

Heinrich August came from the old Meissnian nobility von Helldorff . He was the son of Karl August von Helldorff (born September 2, 1748 in Wildschütz; † March 27, 1795 in Nödlitz) and his wife, Johanne Henriette Wilhelmine, née von Borck (born August 24, 1769 in Nödlitz; † May 28 1801 ibid). His mother was the owner of the manor Nödlitz and his father was a premier lieutenant in Saxony . D. When the latter died, his mother married the lawyer Friedrich August Wenzel, with whom Heinrich August von Helldorff grew up as a stepchild.

Military career

Helldorf received his first training at the Dresden Cadet Corps , which was disbanded in 1809 during the war against Austria . He first fought as a second lieutenant in the black band of Duke Friedrich Wilhelm . In the battle near Connewitz on July 26, 1809, his left hand was cut off, 17 saber blows hit him and his uniform was perforated in 42 places. Later he served in the wars of liberation from 1813 in the Russian 20th fighter regiment.

He received the order Pour le Mérite on October 13, 1814 and made a career in the Prussian Army after his homeland fell to the Province of Saxony through the Congress of Vienna . There he rose to major general and was last since January 1850 in command of Wittenberg . On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the day on which he distinguished himself in the battle near Leipzig, Helldorff received from the king the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves.
