Location of Wahlitz in Saxony-Anhalt

Wahlitz is a district of the town of Gommern in the Jerichower Land district in Saxony-Anhalt , Germany.

geography

Wahlitz is located northwest of Gommern. A wide forest area extends to the southeast, extending beyond Gommern to the Elbknie near Dornburg . Gommern is the small town in the JL district 5 km away.

The federal road 184 and the Biederitz – Trebnitz railway line run through the village ; Wahlitz has a stop at the latter.

history

In the 2nd and 3rd centuries there was a larger settlement to the north of today's town, in which grass iron ore was smelted with meadow lime . The village, now inhabited by Slavs, later moved further to the southeast and was first mentioned in 1025 in connection with the occupation by the Magdeburg Marienstift with the name Walize. Later place names are Willitz (1275), Waltz or Walcze (1367). The monastery of Our Lady in Magdeburg was the owner from 1479 to 1523 , after which Wahlitz went to the Lorenzkloster, which left the place as fiefs to various noble families , who in turn incorporated Wahlitz into the Königsborn estate .

The location on the old Magdeburg-Brandenburg trade and military route had a positive effect on the development of the village . Part of this path was the so-called Klusdamm, first mentioned in 1479, an approximately eight kilometer long flood-proof route that crossed the Elbe lowlands with numerous bridges from Magdeburg and ended south of Wahlitz. There was a bridge over the Ehle , which is still there today as a Klusbrücke . At this bridge, the diocese of Magdeburg maintained a border and customs station to the neighboring state of Gommern, which at that time was an exclave in Electoral Saxony . Luther is said to have stopped in the neighboring Mönchsklause in 1524 on his way to Magdeburg, and since then the building has been referred to as the "Lutherturm" in the area. It later became a forester's house, after which it was used as an excursion restaurant until it was destroyed in World War II .

In 1782 a Vorwerk was built near Wahlitz , owned by the von Gossler family. At the end of the 19th century, this developed into an independent estate with 300 acres of fields and 30 acres of meadow. The farmers resident in the village owned a total of 568 acres of land, the number of inhabitants at that time was around 200.

Wahlitz had been under the rule of Brandenburg-Prussia since the end of the Thirty Years' War . In the course of the administrative development of the site initially belonged to the district Jerichow I, from which, after the Prussian reorganization of 1815 the same district with the district town castle was. Although Wahlitz was in a convenient location with the construction of the Chaussee Magdeburg - Zerbst and the parallel railway line opened in 1874, no industry settled here. The place remained dominated by agriculture and in 1900 had only 386 inhabitants. In 1912 the cemetery around the church was closed and a new burial place was created by the parish in the forest.

On September 30, 1928, the Wahlitz manor district was merged with the rural community Wahlitz.

After the end of World War II, the population had increased to almost 600. As a result of the land reform ordered by the Soviet occupying power in 1945 , the Wahlitz estate was expropriated and the property was divided between 30 new farmers . A retirement home was set up in the manor house. As a result of the territorial reform of 1952, Wahlitz was incorporated into the Burg district. As the first in the district, six new farmers founded an LPG on September 17, 1952 . In 1972 the place, which at that time only had about 480 inhabitants, joined the Gommern community association.

After the end of the GDR, the LPG disbanded, and foreign companies took over the management of the agricultural land. After another regional reform, Wahlitz came to the district of Jerichower Land with the previous district town of Burg. The largest employer has now become the retirement and nursing home, which is still housed in the former manor house and has been expanded with additions. In the last few years, more than 200 single and multi-family houses have been built in two new development areas and the number of residents rose to 1064. On January 1, 2005, Wahlitz was incorporated into the city of Gommern.

Attractions

  • In the south of Wahlitz is the Protestant St. Dorothea Church , which was first mentioned in 1275. It was founded by the Leitzkau monastery at the beginning of the 12th century and built from rubble stones in the Romanesque style. First alterations were made to the choir at the end of the 15th century, and in the 18th century a half-timbered tower was added to the west gable. The interior is finished with a flat ceiling and equipped with a round triumphal arch and two galleries on the long sides. The pulpit from 1677 and the octagonal late Gothic font are the oldest inventory items.
  • At the northern exit of the town there is an oak tree that is around 300 years old on the main road . It measures a height of 23 meters, its trunk has a circumference of 4.25 meters and the treetop extends over 21 meters.
  • The so-called Klusbrücke crosses the river Ehle about two kilometers southwest of the village . The quarry stone double arch bridge was built in the 16th century and is the last remaining bridge structure on the Klusdamm. On the south side of the western arch of the bridge there is a stone plaque with the Magdeburg coat of arms and the year 168 ..., which is to be seen as an indication of the maintenance obligation of Magdeburg.
