Reinhard Friedrich studied art history and journalism at the Free University of Berlin . He discovered photography for himself and made it his source of income by producing color slides of baroque churches and selling them to art history institutes in the USA. Architectural photography remained his largest field of work throughout his life. In the 1950s he was employed in the external office of the Free University of Berlin, which initially shifted his focus to photographing university buildings in Germany.

Through his preference for architectural motifs, he came into contact with the well-known architect and city planner Hans Scharoun at the end of the 1950s . From then on Friedrich took photographs of his work - housing estates in Charlottenburg-Nord , Bremen, Wolfsburg and elsewhere. He followed Scharoun in Berlin to the construction site of the Philharmonie on Kemperplatz and began to photograph the progress of the work up to the opening. Friedrich's interest now went beyond the history of the building itself. He accompanied the orchestra with his camera for over 40 years and captured everyday life at the Philharmonic with all the changing conductors . An illustrated book published in 1999 with extensive photographic material from the previous decades illustrates Friedrich's ability to be omnipresent during a concert at the same time, thereby capturing different perspectives and emotions, and acting discreetly so that vain self-portrayals of the actors are not given an opportunity. The music critic Hans-Jörg von Jena wrote about the illustrated book on welt.de : “Sounds cannot be preserved optically. Reinhard Friedrich, however, manages the trick of having them reflected in faces. The corresponding piece of music is assigned to each picture. ”The consistent use of black and white photos testifies to“ Prussian nobility ”. Musician images of his authorship can also be found on numerous record sleeves and CD booklets .

Other documents of historically inestimable value, namely photographs of Berlin buildings and construction projects as well as architectural competitions, were created as works on behalf of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the Senate Building Administrations, Berlin.
