The swather is a harvesting machine with which crops such as grass , grain or rape are cut and deposited in swaths on the ground. This method is mainly used in countries where the growing season is too short for the grain to ripen by itself. If the grain was not mowed first, it might not ripen before winter. An alternative would be to spray the grain dead. When the grain has matured, it is threshed.
