Swaths of grass

As a swath or windrow refers to the row form together fair or stored ( geschwadete ) crop at harvest of particular grass or grain , but also from other crops , for example in the use of sugar beet leaves as feed. The term haymade is also used for hay .

When using grassland , the grass mown to produce hay or silage is " swathed " with a swather with a baler , forage harvester or loader wagon before being recovered. For this purpose, a side rake is usually used to counter-swath once lengthways and then back again. Alternatively, the swath is deposited directly in the middle. In this way, the cuttings are straightened together in rows so that they can then be retrieved in a more labor-saving manner. The same applies to when grain harvest accruing straw , as far as not already from the combine harvester was placed in windrows or due to rain before the straw handling for better drying tedded be had. In addition, swaths immediately place the crop on the swath after cutting.

When drying hay, the grass to be dried is usually placed in a swath again in the evening so that it is not so heavily moistened again by rain or nighttime dew . Such a night swath can be created not only with the special rake machine, but also with a rotary tedder with a reduced rotor speed .
