Company history

Reinhard Wirtgen

In November 1961, Reinhard Wirtgen began small transport orders in Windhagen and the development of concrete crushers for road construction in a small workshop. He systematically expanded his fleet of his own milling machines up to 100 large machines. With a team of over 150 employees, he established the process as the standard throughout Germany. At the end of the 1970s, Reinhard Wirtgen developed hot milling for cold milling , thereby increasing the efficiency of the process. The company took the first step towards internationalization with the establishment of the first Wirtgen branch abroad.

Wirtgen expanded its product range to include four product lines. In 1981, with Wirtgen surface miners, he opened up open-cast mining and routing of hard rock as new areas of application. In 1987 he introduced cold recycling as a new and economical method for road rehabilitation; In 1989 he integrated the slipform paver division into his company. It also offered solutions for paving concrete roads and monolithic profiles.

In 1997 Jürgen Wirtgen and Stefan Wirtgen took over management of the company. The expansion to the Wirtgen Group began with the integration of the road paver manufacturer Vögele; In 1999 the roller manufacturer Hamm was also integrated. In addition to expanding the global sales network, investments were made in the efficiency and capacity of the main plants in Germany.

In 2006 the Wirtgen Group created two new business areas ("Road Technologies" and "Mineral Technologies"). The development of the second business area began with the integration of Kleemann GmbH, manufacturer of stationary and mobile processing systems .

In 2014, the Wirtgen Group integrated Benninghoven GmbH & Co. KG, a traditional asphalt mixing plant manufacturer.

In 2017 the agricultural machinery manufacturer John Deere announced that it would take over the Wirtgen Group for 4.4 billion euros. The acquisition was completed on December 1, 2017.
