The Hamm AG is a manufacturer of rollers for various areas of road and airport, dam and earthworks. The company is based in Tirschenreuth and is the world's largest manufacturer of road rollers. Hamm AG is a member of the Wirtgen Group and the oldest still producing roller manufacturer in Germany. As part of the Wirtgen Group, the company belongs to the US agricultural and construction machinery group Deere & Company .
Company history
The brothers Franz and Anton Hamm founded the "Maschinenfabrik Gebr. Hamm" in Tirschenreuth in 1878. In the following years the company was engaged in the construction of agricultural machines. They made the machines in-house. In 1911, Hamm came onto the market with an innovative motor-driven road roller that could replace the steam rollers that were common at the time . Hamm AG never built steam-powered road rollers. From 1928 the company concentrated exclusively on the development, manufacture and sale of road rollers. In the following years, further innovative products such as tandem rollers and pneumatic tire rollers as well as new compaction techniques were developed, including oscillation. After the Second World War, Hamm was the leading roll manufacturer internationally.
Between 1932 and 1970 Hamm had the patent for all-wheel-steered and all-wheel-driven tandem rollers and was the only manufacturer of these machines worldwide. 1973 the supply of spare parts for the then competitor Hatra was taken over. In 1976, Hamm was taken over by IBH-Holding AG in Mainz, which filed for bankruptcy in 1983.
In 1992, Hamm expanded its program to include new areas of application and added a fully hydrostatic stabilizer and recycler called "Raco" to its product range. As part of the takeover of the Wirtgen Group , this program was taken over by Wirtgen in 1999. The collaboration with the Wirtgen Group began in 1999, and Hamm became the third of what are now five manufacturers in the Wirtgen group, alongside Wirtgen and Vögele . In 2002 a new plant was opened in Tirschenreuth; since then, Hamm has been operating the most modern roller mill in Europe. In 2003 Hamm celebrated its 125th birthday with international guests and the festive presentation of the latest technologies. In August 2006 the new loading center was inaugurated and at the end of 2006 the existing assembly hall was expanded by a fifth conveyor belt. In 2007, construction began on a new drum factory, which went into operation in September 2008. This resulted in the relocation of the production of roller rolls from Poland to the home location.
Company data
The operating area of the plant in Tirschenreuth currently covers 353,000 square meters. The production hall has four assembly lines with a length of 100 meters each. Another three belts for the Compactline (HD8-14) are housed in the small machine assembly hall.
