The company is part of the Wirtgen Group , an international group of companies in the construction machinery industry, also based in Windhagen. As part of the Wirtgen Group, the company belongs to the US agricultural and construction machinery group Deere & Company .
history
The company was founded in 1961 by Reinhard Wirtgen, then 20, in Windhagen, initially as a transport company for building materials. The first concrete smashing device was built as early as the 1960s, followed by the development of the first hot milling machine for removing damaged asphalt surfaces. In the mid-1970s, more than 100 Wirtgen machines were in use across Europe. The next development was a hot recycler for reprofiling deformed road surfaces by reusing the milled material. Cold milling machines were developed from this at the end of the 1970s .
Subsidiaries were established across Europe as early as the mid-1970s, and a global dealer network was created in the 1980s. In the 1990s, the service sector was spun off and the company focused on the design, manufacture and sale of construction machinery.
