The milling (including abrading ) is a construction method in the road-building , and serves road pavements from asphalt ablate. The removal takes place with the help of a rotating milling drum, which is equipped with milling tools (chisels). A distinction must be made between hot milling and cold milling technology. The heat milling technology was developed in the early 1970s and consists of heating and subsequent milling of the asphalt layer.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the newly developed cold milling technology caught on because it did not need to warm up the road surface and the milling tools were more hard. The milled material ( asphalt granulate ) can be reused after removal , provided that the asphalt is free from foreign matter and harmful substances such as tar .

The advantage of milling is the rapid construction process and the targeted and precise removal of road layers. The reasons for milling road pavements can be varied. In this way, for example, a damaged road surface can be removed and the required grip and evenness can be restored. A complete expansion and subsequent reinstallation of the road pavement can be dispensed with.

Milling is also suitable for removing road markings or removing small areas of damage. In this case, the so-called fine milling technology is used.
