Swietelsky is an international construction company based in Linz in Austria .

The company's activities extend to all sectors of the construction industry, especially building construction and civil engineering . In 2018/19, Swietelsky had an average of around 10,300 employees and had sales of around 2.8 billion euros. The turnover was split equally between Austria and other countries. In addition to the headquarters in Linz, Austria has branches and subsidiaries in all federal states. Foreign core markets are Germany, Hungary and the Czech Republic, there are also branches in 15 other countries (Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Italy, Croatia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia ).

The company was founded by Hellmuth Swietelsky in 1936 in Gmunden in Upper Austria. It mainly dealt with road construction and asphalting. The company moved to Linz as early as 1937. The first mixing plant was put into operation in 1938. When the war broke out, Swietelsky began building railroads around Vienna and established a new location in Vienna. For buildings abroad, the Continental Construction was founded.

After the Second World War , the company grew rapidly as a result of the reconstruction, created branches in all federal states and was active in all construction sectors. As early as 1957, the company converted into a limited liability company (GmbH) was one of the five largest construction companies in Austria. In 1962 a subsidiary was founded in Munich with locations in Traunstein and Emmerting .

The company's founder, Hellmuth Swietelsky , was named Man of the Year by the International Road Federation in Washington, DC in 1965 .

In 1974 the testing laboratory in St. Martin near Traun was approved as a state-authorized testing institute and in 1976 it was awarded the state certification for being able to use the state coat of arms in business dealings.

After the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 and in the following years, branches were also established in a number of neighboring countries to the east.

In 2000 the company was certified according to ISO 9000 .

In the years after 2000, some subsidiaries were bought or shares were taken over. Swietelsky is one of the partners in Rail Transport Service or eurailpool .

The change in the shares in the existing ownership structure brought a new majority since 2005. Since 2012, the company has been run as a family business by the two owner families Hovaguimian and Brustmann.

Today Swietelsky is the third largest Austrian construction industry group with an average of around 10,300 employees and an annual turnover of more than € 2.8 billion. The group currently owns around 100 subsidiaries in Germany and abroad.

Swietelsky is a company certified according to ISO 9001: Quality Management System, ISO 14001: Environmental Management System and BS OHSAS 18001: Safety System .

On December 4, 2019, the Group announced the change of name from Swietelsky Baugesellschaft mbH to Swietelsky AG on this date. The change in legal form has no effect on the composition of the owners and workforce, and there is no provision for shares to be listed on the stock exchange.
