Under a Walking harvester refers to a special kind of wood harvesting , which takes on rollers or chains border travels. The machines are equipped with special elements that allow the harvester to be used in difficult terrain. Due to the small footprint that the harvester requires, the wood harvest is particularly gentle on the soil.

history

In 1990 the first walking harvester prototype was produced by Plustech Oy . The model moved on six legs, based on the principle of movement of the ant . Two more models followed, the last of which was donated to the Lusto Forest Museum in Finland in 2011.

With the help of a portal harvester, as it was designed in 2009 at the Technical University of Dresden , ditches and stepped terrain can be overcome, which conventional forest machines would not be able to bridge. The harvester cabin moves on a rail that connects two stand bases. Each stand base can be lifted separately and set down again at a different angle to the other stand base.

meaning

The aspect of soil conservation is of current and future interest in forest management. To date, however, none of the walking harvester concepts has gone into series production . The reason for this is the speed of movement of the machines. Compared to conventional harvesters, this is low. At the current stage of development, walking harvester could not be used economically to the same extent. A Swiss manufacturer offers so-called walking excavators, the wheels and feet of which can be adapted to any terrain using hydraulic cylinders. In some countries this is therefore also called a spider excavator. A German dealer equips these walking excavators with a harvester head and sells them in forestry.
