The company was founded by Irvine Bell in 1954 as a repair shop for agricultural machinery. In the early 1960s he began developing and producing his own agricultural machinery and chargers. In 1964, Irvine Bell presented a robust, hydrostatically driven three-wheel loader that is still very popular in many African countries. In the mid-1970s, sons Gary and Peter joined the company. From then on, Bell Equipment became increasingly involved in earthmoving. With self-developed wheel loaders and tractors a rapid increase in production began. In 1984 a factory was opened in Richards Bay , which is still the company's central production facility today. The first articulated dump truck Bell B25A in the conventional 6 × 6 design was manufactured there from 1984 . In 1998 Bell Equipment presented the B40C, which has been successfully produced for 10 years, worldwide. With the B50D model, which has been in production since 2002, Bell Equipment sells what is currently (2013) the world's largest heavy-duty articulated truck. Bell Equipment currently has branches and production facilities in Africa, Europe, Australia, the USA and Russia.

Germany

Bell Equipment has been producing articulated dump trucks for the European market in its own plant in Eisenach since October 2003 . All vehicles for the European market are completed and finally assembled in Eisenach on the basis of core assemblies delivered from the South African parent plant and the components of the predominantly European suppliers. The European Logistics Center (ELC) has its branch in Alsfeld ; Sales and customer service are also carried out from the Alsfeld branch.

Ownership

The family company went public in 1995. The majority of the shares are currently owned by the Bell family.
