Coatetelco ball court

Coatetelco is a small ruin site, mainly from the post-classical period, in the southwestern part of the Mexican state of Morelos , around 25 km as the crow flies south-southwest of the state capital Cuernavaca near the large archaeological site Xochicalco . The few excavated pre-Hispanic buildings are located in the middle of the modern village of Coatetelco (the name is Náhuatl and is formed from cōā-tl , snake, and tetel-li , stone monticle, with the locative suffix -co ).

Main pyramid

Coatetelco's buildings are arranged around a rectangular square. Its west side occupies the outside of the ball court. The ball playground has the usual construction of post-classical central Mexico: a low, sloping reflective surface plastered with stucco on both long sides, above a narrow flat surface and the vertical end wall, which is not fully preserved. Both ends of the ball playground are designed as wider areas, in the northern part a narrow staircase leads to the playing field, which is a little lower. A double staircase leads up from the west side to the platforms that form the sides of the ball court, while on the side facing the courtyard a series of rectangular and a round low platform are in front. Several graves have also been found here. In the southernmost platform there were incense spoons ( tlemāitl ) as offerings or remnants of sacrificial acts . Adjacent was a tzompantli , a construction to display the skulls of those killed.

Female figure from the main pyramid

On the southern side of the square is the heavily damaged remnant of a pyramid with the double staircase typical of central Mexico. Presumably there were two temples at the top of the pyramid, which, as in Tenochtitlán and Teopanzolco, were dedicated to different gods. On the east side of the square was the largest pyramid with a single staircase with wide stringers. A stone female figure was found in this pyramid.
