Almeida Garrett's birthplace

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The birthplace of Almeida Garrett is a residential building on the western edge of the historic old town of the Portuguese city of Porto .

The four-story building on Rua do Dr. Barbosa de Castro, No. 37 (until 1933: Rua do Calvário), with three window axes, is part of the closed perimeter block development of the street row. On the facade, in the central axis of the first floor and occupying its entire height, a large, richly decorated plaque in the form of a medallion commemorates the poet, who was born there on February 4, 1799 and lived until 1804.

The inscription reads:

The city of Porto took the first steps in early 2019 to acquire the vacant building and use it as the Museu do Liberalismo for the Liberal Revolution of 1820 when the building burned down completely on April 27, 2019.
