Tocha is a municipality ( Freguesia ) and small town (Vila) in Portugal with 3992 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). The beaches in Praia da Tocha are regionally known .

history

In 1140 Portugal's first king D. Afonso Henriques gave Tocha to the Santa Cruz Monastery in Coimbra . After it belonged to the municipality of Cadima (Cantanhede district), Tocha became an independent municipality for the first time in 1907, and on July 9, 1985 it was raised to the rank of Vila .

Tocha is on the A17 that connects Marinha Grande with Aveiro. The national road N 109 (IC 1) from Leiria to Vila Nova de Gaia crosses the town center in a north-south direction.

Sports

The football club União Desportiva da Tocha, founded in 1953, is based in the municipality . The municipality's soccer field served as the venue for the qualifying round of Group 7 of the 2011 Women's World Cup , where the Portuguese women's national soccer team won their highest qualifying victory on March 31, 2010, 7-0 against Armenia .
