The name Hochholz is derived from wood = forest. The place is not far from the Murn and is still partly surrounded by forest. The old name is Hochwurza .

The earliest evidence of settlement or entry goes back to the Middle Neolithic . In 1972 Fritz Heinzmann found a shoe last wedge-like perforated wedge from Hochholz.

Hochholtz was first mentioned in 1459.

On June 1, 1573 the Hofmark Warnbach was sold, including the Hochholtz and the Purgholtz zu Holtzhausen.

In 1760 there were 2 properties in Hochholz, each 1/32 Häusl, and these were owned by the Hofmark Griesstätt .

Today's municipality of Griesstätt was divided into three tax districts in 1857: Griesstätt, Holzhausen and Kolbing. At that time, Hochholz belonged to the Kolbing tax district as well as Kolbing, Bergham, Goßmaning, Grundbichel, Haid, Kornau, Schmiding, Viehhausen, Weichselbaum, Weitmoos and Wörlham.
