Moudros ( Greek Μούδρος ( m. Sg. )) Is a village with 974 inhabitants (as of 2011) in the east of the Greek island of Limnos and the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name. Until the administrative reform in 2010 , Moudros was an independent municipality.

location

The predominantly flat, in the north and south slightly hilly area of the municipality extends over the entire eastern peninsula, which in turn is divided into two approximately equal peninsulas. One peninsula extends to the northeast and the other to the south. In the west at the narrowest point of Limnos with less than 4 km borders the municipality of Atsiki . This is followed to the south by the 12 km long and 4 km wide Gulf of Moudros (Κόλπος Μουδρου) with the administrative center of the same name, Moudros. The eastern section of the coast is characterized by five sandy beaches stretching over several kilometers between Cape Petsia (Ακρωτήριο Πετσιά) and Cape Agios Soson (Ακρωτήριο Άγιος dieωζών). Here are the approximately 6 km² large salt lagoon Alyki (Λίμνη Αλυκή), the 2.3 km² brackish water lake Chortarolimni (Χορταρολίμνη) and between the two the Asprolimni (Ασπρόλιμνη) with about 0.42 km². Overall, the north-south extension from Cape Plaka (Ακρωτήριο Πλάκα) the northeasternmost point of the island and Cape Agia Irini (Ακρωτήριο Ειρήνη) the southeasternmost 29 km. West of Cape Plaka is the Agios Charalambos Bay (Όρμος Άγιος Χαράλαμπος) then the coast runs southwest to Kotsinas at the apex of the Gulf of Pournia (Κόλπος Πουρνιας) the second largest bay on the island.

history

Several locations of microliths along the east coast prove the human presence at the end of the last glacial period about 15,000 years ago. Ouriakos is interpreted as a storage place for groups of hunters and gatherers .

In Poliochni have archaeological excavations v to a settlement in the 5th or 4th century. BC, which earned the prehistoric city the nickname "oldest city in Europe".

Moudros gained importance in the First World War through the British efforts under Winston Churchill in early 1915 to gain control of the Dardanelles. In addition, the port was the base for the Allies' blockade of the Dardanelles ( Battle of Gallipoli ) during World War I.

The port went down in world history when the Moudros armistice between Turkey and the Allies was signed on October 30, 1918 on board the HMS Agamemnon , which meant the surrender of the Ottoman Empire .
