Atsiki ( Greek Ατσική ( f. Sg. )) Is a village with 848 inhabitants (as of 2011), administrative center and a municipality in the north of the Greek island of Limnos . Until the administrative reform in 2010 Atsiki formed an independent municipality.
location
The municipality of Atsiki is located in the north of the island. The predominantly flat terrain in the east is characterized by agricultural use. The terrain becomes slightly hilly to the north and north-west and rises to heights of over 400 m in the almost unpopulated north-west. The uninhabited island of Sergitsi is off the north coast , about 1.3 km from Cape Agrilia (Ακρωτήριο Αγριλιά). Neighboring parishes are Myrina in the west and Nea Koutali in the south. In the east at the narrowest point of the island with about 4 km borders Moudros .
Administrative division
The municipality of Atsiki is divided into seven local communities. The population figures are from the 2011 census.

Population development
The concentration of the population in Myrina, the administrative center of the island, is associated with the decline and aging of the rural population. The fluctuating population in Atsiki, the administrative seat of the municipality, and the increase in population in Agios Dimitrios, which is due to the secure income from viticulture, cannot counteract this trend overall. Contrary to official information, the actual population is 2727 people.

economy
Agriculture is the most important branch of the community's economy. With the exception of wheat and wine, production is almost exclusively for the local market. Animal husbandry and cheese production are other important factors.
Agriculture
Agriculture in the region is characterized by poor soil fertility, small areas under cultivation, lack of water resources, outdated cultivation methods and a heavy dependence on subsidies. The switch to organic farming offers the region positive prospects. The beginnings of organic farming were made with wine production. The experience was followed by the cultivation of wheat, oil, citrus fruits and almonds.
Viticulture is characterized by the production of quality wines. Above all, Muscat d'Alexandrie is grown for the production of the sweet dessert wine Muscat von Limnos (OPE) and the dry or semi-sweet white wine Limnos (OPAP), which is also pressed with Muscat Blanc . In addition, various local varieties are grown on a small scale.
Grain is produced in high quality. Although wheat cultivation is subsidized, barley, the most commonly grown grain, has better yields due to the environmental conditions. Alfalfa is also grown as a feed.
Due to the sufficient availability of private pastureland, goats, sheep and cows are kept on pasture. Due to the long tradition in animal husbandry, Limnos is famous for the quality of the Kalathaki Limnou (Καλαθάκι Λήμνου) cheese made from the milk of sheep and goats. Beekeeping represents a clear growth potential. The keeping of pigs, rabbits and poultry serves for self-sufficiency, fishing is carried out to a small extent.
However, the high quality agricultural products are opposed to non-commercial marketing and distribution methods.
