history

In ancient times the island was known under the name Sideritēs (Σιδερητης). In 1284 Sergitsi belonged to the estate of the Gomati monastery in the bay of the same name on Limnos. The then name Sergitzi (Σεργίτζη) refers to the name of a former owner. At the beginning of the 15th century the island belonged to the governor of Limnos and in 1448 it changes to the Megisti Lavra monastery on Mount Athos .

In a map by the Italian traveler Cristoforo Buondelmonti from 1418, the island is shown without a name. The Turkish cartographer Piri Reis depicted the island in two maps from 1521 and 1540 with the name Köpek Adasi (Σκυλονήσι 'dog island') and as Ğezìre-i-Kelb (Sideritis).

natural reserve

The island is part of the Natura 2000 area GR 4110008, Limnos - islands and islets (Νησίδες & Βραχονησίδες νήσου Λήμνου (Σεργίτσι-Διαβάτες-Κομπιο-Καστριά-Τηγάνι-Καρβαλάς-Πρασονήσι)) and was due to the presence of Eleonora's falcon and coral seagulls along with some smaller rock islands classified by the bird protection organization BirdLife International as Important Bird Area GR 131 Rocky Islets of Limnos Island (Βραχονησίδες Νήσου Λήμνου).
