history

A network of early Bronze Age settlements from the 3rd millennium BC BC could be proven by systematic excavations in Myrina and Koukonisi, whose level of development corresponded to that of Poliochni . Based on surface finds in the northern part of the island, settlement is suspected as early as the Neolithic period.

The privileged location in the Gulf of Moudros enabled permanent settlement for more than two thousand years. On the one hand it is one of the safest natural harbors in the Aegean Sea, on the other hand the largest and most fertile area of the island of Limnos allowed agricultural overproduction for trade. Since the depth of the sea is around 0.50 meters today, Koukonisi probably once formed a peninsula.

The evaluations of three excavation campaigns (1992, 1994 to 1996 and 1999) show a continuous settlement since the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC. With a heyday of the settlement in the early and middle Bronze Age. The destruction of the settlement by earthquakes can be proven twice. Stone paving and sewer system are for about 2500 BC. Occupied. Ceramic shards and characteristic Mycenaean clay figures attest to the existence of a permanent settlement between 1400 and 1100 BC. The successive construction phases, as well as the quantity and variety of high-quality finds prove intensive trade relations with Troy , the Greek mainland as well as the central Aegean and Crete .

Today grain is grown on the island.
