The monastery Altenhohenau is a former convent of the Dominican Sisters in the community Griesstätt in Bavaria in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising , and now serves as the "Father's House for all Nations" as an international meeting place for Christian Unity. It is located on the River Inn about 7 km upstream from Wasserburg am Inn . The church of St. Peter and Paul designed by Ignaz Günther is considered one of the most beautiful Rococo churches in Germany.

In Altenhohenau, the Dominicans ran agriculture and a boarding school (elementary and secondary school) until the 1990s. In mid-2013, the few remaining Dominican Sisters moved to the mother house of their congregation in California . The monastery was sold to two private individuals in 2014. Despite initial hesitation, the church was taken over by the Archbishop's Ordinariate in Munich and run as a branch church of the parish of Griesstätt. A private association should take care of the revitalization and use of the traditional pilgrimage church . The diocesan - Caritas of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising eV could not agree with the new owners to a new lease until 2024 current. The vocational school for geriatric care Teresa von Avila and the vocational schools for curative education care and curative education care help can safely continue operations and train future specialists for care for the elderly, disabled and youth welfare, integrative day care centers and rehabilitation facilities.

Monastery and monastery church today

history

The monastery consecrated to Saints Peter and Paul was founded in 1235 by Count Konrad von Wasserburg and his wife Kunigunde as a Dominican convent. Dominicans can also be traced back to 1270 . However, it can be considered historically certain that in "veteri Hohenawe" (the "old Hohenau") a Petruskirche stood before the foundation of the monastery - the town charter of Wasserburg a. I., which is dated to the year 1137, indicates a church in "Hohenoue". This is also plausible due to the fact that the salt road from Salzburg and Reichenhall to Munich or Regensburg led here via a ford in the Inn. The abolition of the monastery in the course of secularization took place in 1803, but it served as a reception monastery for the Dominican women from the surrounding monasteries. The nuns stayed in the monastery until 1822 . Later private individuals bought the monastery buildings and the church , many monastery buildings were demolished. In 1881 the brothers Josef and Hubert Soyer from Griesstätt bought the monastery. They recognized the historical value of the place. In 1922 Katharina Soyer, Josef Soyer's widow, sold the church back to the Dominican Sisters. They rebuilt the traditional monastery there in 1926. Today, in addition to the church, the two grain boxes, the house of the monastery judge and the residential building and refectory of the monastery are still preserved. The building and refectory of the monastery are still owned by the Soyer family. In 2014 the order gave up the monastery and sold the new convent, school and agricultural buildings that had been built when the monastery was repopulated in 1923 to two private individuals.
