Austrians monument
The Austrian memorial in the Schwanderholz forest , near the city limits in the southwest of Kempten (Allgäu) , commemorates those who fell in the First and Second World Wars . It was inaugurated on Pentecost 1937. The Vorarlberg graves are in the immediate vicinity .
The obelisk-like memorial stands in a small, overgrown quarry and is composed of Nagelfluh rock , which arrived in this forest as a maze during the last ice age. The memorial is marked by a bronze plaque on which the names of the fallen soldiers are immortalized.
The soldiers who fell in World War I were members of the Austrian Soldiers' Comradeship in Kempten . After the Second World War the plate was replaced. Since then, this record also bears the names of those who died in World War II. Above the panel there is a coat of arms of the Austrian Empire . Below that are the years 1914 and 1918 as well as 1939 and 1945 , next to each other . They indicate the duration of the two world wars.
