The war memorial in Lenzfried , a district of Kempten (Allgäu) , is a memorial to the fallen soldiers and victims of various wars, unveiled in 1926. The listed building was expanded with the dates of the Second World War in 1952 because of further war victims .

history

In 1873 the association “Veteranen- und Kriegerkameradschaft Lenzfried” was founded in order to dedicate itself to honoring the fallen and missing. Of 277 Lenzfrieds who took part in the First World War , 55 died and six were missing. The war participants received an honorary gift of 20 marks from donations and a food fund.

To commemorate the victims of the World War, a war memorial was unveiled at the Franciscan monastery on August 8, 1926 . Because of an illness of the Mindelheim sculptor Xaver Abt (1874–1949), the bronze figure of Saint George was only unveiled on August 29th. The consecration of the monument took place a year later with the participation of the neighborhood associations.

In 1952 the monument was expanded. During the Second World War, the northern part of Sankt Mangs , the rural community which was incorporated into Kempten in 1972, lost 115 men and 59 people were missing. The veterans' association created war chronicles from the two world wars.

description

The war memorial shows an equestrian figure of Saint George, equipped with a steel helmet , which is depicted in the typical hero figure of the dragon slayer and in the process thrusts a spear into the dragon's throat .

The memorial is supplemented with four memorial plaques with the names of those who fell and missing in World War II.
