Me and the Devil Blues is a piece of music by the American Delta Blues musician Robert Johnson , which he recorded in 1937 on Vocalion Records .
However, the blues song did not reach widespread popularity - like many of Johnson's pieces - until 1961 when it appeared on the album King of the Delta Blues Singers .
The song is about domestic violence and possibly also about a pact with the devil , when the devil appears at the beginning of the piece and the lyrical self tells him that it is obviously time to leave .
The song was covered by a large number of blues musicians, including Eric Clapton , the Cowboy Junkies and The Doors .
