Vocalion Records was a music label founded in New York in 1916 . Among the many notable productions by Vocalion were Robert Johnson's two recording sessions in 1936 and 1937.

history

In 1916, the New York-based Aeolian Piano Company began producing phonographs and founded the record label Vocalion Records at the same time.

Vocalion used a reddish brown shellac mixture, which visually stood out from the usual black records. The company advertising suggested that their "red records" were the best ( Vocalion Red Records are best ) and lasted longer ( Red Records last longer ).

In 1925, Vocalion was bought by Brunswick Records . During the 1920s, Vocalion began producing so-called "Race Records" aimed at the African American market.

In April 1930, Brunswick was at Warner Bros. sold. In December 1931, the American Record Corporation was licensed to Brunswick. In 1938, Vocalion became a trademark of Columbia Records . 1940 was the temporary end of Vocalion.

In the 1950s, Vocalion was revived by Decca Records to distribute old productions. Since 1997 CDs with historical recordings from the period between 1920 and 1970 have been produced under the Vocalion label.
