The Church of Batısandal is the ruins of a Byzantine basilica in the district of Erdemli of the Turkish province of Mersin .

location

The church ruins in the Rough Cilicia are located on the eastern edge of the village of the same name, about four kilometers from the Mediterranean near Limonlu , the ancient Lamos, and ten kilometers west of Erdemli. It belongs to the mountainous hinterland of the ancient places Lamos and Elaiussa Sebaste and stands at an altitude of about 280 meters directly on the modern road that leads from Limonlu past Öküzlü via Sömek to Cambazlı and Uzuncaburç , the ancient Olba . The Yanıkhan ruins are located about two kilometers to the northwest .

description

From the remains it can be seen that it was a three-aisled column basilica. The apse with a straight end of the choir has been preserved, it was flanked by rectangular side rooms. From the in-situ door sill of the south aisle entrance, the length of the Naos (community area) can be accessed with 10.90 meters. The straight back wall of the apse is about 14 meters wide, the width of the apse is 4.15 meters. A double window with a central column is preserved in the middle. The simple leaf cut of the capital of this column provides the only evidence that the building can be dated to the 6th century.

The associated settlement is completely overbuilt from what is now Batısandal . Some of the buildings are built on old foundations, and numerous spoils are built into the buildings .
