Mike Austin (born February 17, 1910 on the island of Guernsey , † November 23, 2005 in Los Angeles ) was an American golf player and teacher. Since 1974 he has held the world record for the longest drive ever hit in a professional tournament: 515 yards (approx. 471 m).

Career

Mike Austin took his first golf lesson at the age of six. In doing so, he learned to let the golf club run free in the backswing, which early earned him the ability to hit golf balls very far. After moving to the United States of America, he ran a local golf shop in Atlanta as a young man during the American Depression during the summer months. In 1939 Austin moved to Los Angeles where he worked as a golf instructor. He also founded a training studio in Hollywood for boxing , tennis , baseball and golf . When giving golf lessons, Mike Austin would often wear black, tight-fitting overalls with the bones of the human body printed on them. In this way, every student was able to recognize and understand the movements of the skeleton during a correct golf swing.
