from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Europe - Our History (Polish: Europa. Nasza historia ) is a four-volume textbook series that is developed by the German-Polish team of experts and can be used in history lessons at lower secondary level in both countries. The content and design of the textbook are identical in both language versions. Volume 1 of the textbook series was released in June 2016 Volume 2 followed in September 2017 and Volume 3 was published in June 2019 - Volume 4 follows 2020. The textbooks are on the German side of the publishing Eduversum from Wiesbaden published and on the Polish side of the educational publisher Wydawnictwa Szkolne i Pedagogiczne in Warsaw . The conception of the history book was developed jointly by German and Polish experts , the majority of whom are members of the German-Polish Textbook Commission . Here are historical events set both and European countries in a broader context and highlights from several perspectives.

background

The project began in 2008 at the initiative of Frank-Walter Steinmeier , who at the time as Foreign Minister of Germany acted and his Polish counterpart Radosław Sikorski . With the Steering Council and the Expert Council, the appropriate organizational basis for the development of the textbook was created. The steering committee is responsible for the promotion and political coordination of the project. On the German side, these are the Foreign Office and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of the State of Brandenburg, along with other ministries of culture . On the Polish side, the project is supported by the Ministry of National Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage . Another sponsor of the project is the Foundation for German-Polish Cooperation . The textbook series is published by the Joint German-Polish Textbook Commission in cooperation with the Georg Eckert Institute - Leibniz Institute for International Textbook Research in Braunschweig and the Center for Historical Research Berlin of the Polish Academy of Sciences , which jointly also take on the scientific coordination.

Conception

In Europe - Our History , multiple perspectives and an open view of history are the superficial didactic principles of the textbook series. According to this, the students should be made familiar with different perspectives on historical events and the diversity of cultures of remembrance in Germany, Poland and other European and non-European countries. In addition, the author's texts and sources are kept open for interpretation. In this way, the students should have the space themselves to interpret historical events and sources. A characteristic of the series of textbooks is the "Perspective" section, in which controversial topics are illustrated using the opinions of different historians . A unique selling point is the column “Past in the Present”, in which places and cultures of remembrance in Germany, Poland and other countries are dealt with. Another special feature are the method pages in each chapter, in which students are explained methods of historical work using different types of sources, as well as the competence tests with which the students can test and consolidate their knowledge. In addition, there are various elements that, among other things, allow certain events to be embedded in the historical period.
