history

The German reunification 1989–1990 and the German-Polish neighborhood agreement of June 1991 created the possibility of German-Polish cooperation on a scientific level and research into the history of relations between the two countries. In 1999 the Scientific Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences was established in Berlin, which, along with its sister institutions in Moscow, Paris, Rome and Vienna, and in Brussels, was part of the network of foreign, scientific subsidiary institutions of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The initiative of the Polish Foreign Ministry's representative for Polish-German cooperation, Irena Lipowicz , led to the transformation of the Berlin facility into a scientific research institute. On October 11, 2006, the agreement to establish the Center for Historical Research Berlin was signed. A festive opening took place on November 23, 2006 at the Free University of Berlin.

Long-term projects are currently being implemented at the center: the scientific advancement award of the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland (since 2008), “'We, Berliners!' Poland in the Development of Berlin (18th – 21st Centuries) ”(2006–2009),“ German-Polish Places of Remembrance ”(2006–2013),“ Modi Memorandi. Interdisciplinary lexicon on collective memory ”(2011–2014), as well as the individual research projects of the individual academic staff.

In addition, the Center for Historical Research in Berlin publishes a yearbook on German-Polish history and current events in Polish historiography in German under the title “historie”. It is the only Polish scientific journal published abroad.

In 2006 Robert Traba was appointed director of the Center for Historical Research Berlin. The current chair of the Center’s Scientific Advisory Board is Anna Wolff-Powęska .
