Robert Traba (born in 1958 in Węgorzewo ) is a Polish historian , political scientist and cultural scientist .

Life

Robert Traba studied at the Copernicus University in Toruń / Thorn. He is the founder and chairman of the Borussia cultural association in Olsztyn / Allenstein and publisher of the quarterly magazine “Borussia”.

He began his scientific work at the Research Center of the Polish Historical Society in Olsztyn / Allenstein. 1995–2003 Traba was a research assistant at the German Historical Institute in Warsaw ; then worked at the Institute for Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences and headed the "Center for Historical Research Berlin of the Polish Academy of Sciences". He was also a professor at the Aleksander Gieysztor Humanistic Academy in Pułtusk . Robert Traba was appointed full professor by the President of the Republic of Poland on November 28, 2019.

He is chairman of the German-Polish textbook commission and honorary professor at the Free University of Berlin .

From 2009 to 2018 he was a member and later Deputy Chairman of the International Advisory Board of the Topography of Terror Documentation Center in Berlin.

He is the deputy of the President of the Societas Jablonoviana in Leipzig as well as a member of the board of the Historical Association for Warmia and a member of the program council of the International Cultural Center Krakow.

In 2018 he left Berlin and settled in Allenstein.

Awards

  • In 2003 he was awarded a Mordechaj Anielewicz medal for the rescue of the Olsztyn Bet-Tahara House of Cleaning, the earliest work by Erich Mendelsohn .
  • In 2004 he received the German-Polish Culture Prize for his previous work.
  • His book Wschodniopruskość , published in 2005, was named the best historical monograph of the year by the Polish Association of Historians and deals, among other things, with the “East Prussian mentality”.
  • In 2009 he received the medal of Komisja Edukacji Narodowej .
  • In 2011 he was awarded the Polonia Restituta Officer's Cross by President Bronisław Komorowski .
