Sérgio Bernardes

Sérgio Wladimir Bernardes (born April 9, 1919 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ; † June 15, 2002 ibid) was a Brazilian architect of the 20th century.

Life

Bernardes was interested in flying single-engine airplanes from an early age and participated in car races within the boundaries of his hometown. At the age of fifteen he was the architect of a private residence built according to his plans. In 1948 he completed his training at the Faculdade Nacional de Arquitectura of the Universidade do Brasil , today's Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro . During his studies he was already active as an architect and in the field of interior design. One of these projects was the Country Club in the city of Petropolis . His professors were among others Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer .

In 1952, Bernardes' design for the São Domingos Church in São Paulo was awarded the International Prize for Sacred Art in Darmstadt . In the years that followed, a number of his designs were implemented and awarded. This also included a prize for the design of a house at the Venice Triennale in 1954 , the proceeds of which the sports car fan used to buy a Ferrari , which he took with him on his trips abroad and drove on various racetracks. As an amateur racing driver, he even took part in sports car races. At the 1954 Portuguese Grand Prix he drove a Ferrari 225S , but retired from the race.

Bernardes died in his home on June 15, 2002, two years after suffering a stroke. He left behind his wife, two daughters and two sons, of whom the older Claudio is also an architect and Sergio Junior is a filmmaker. Both sons have since died.

  • 1954: Steel pavilion of the national steel company of Brazil, the Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), above the lake of the Parque do Ibirapuera in São Paulo. The structure was dismantled two years later. A new building from 2001 still exists today.
