Thomas Kothmann

Thomas Kothmann (born April 22, 1965 in Hof ) is a Lutheran theologian , pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria and adjunct professor at the chair for religious education and didactics of religious education at the University of Regensburg .

Live and act

After graduating from the Schiller-Gymnasium in Hof, Thomas Kothmann studied Protestant theology from 1986 to 1993 at the Augustana University in Neuendettelsau , at the Australian Lutheran College in Adelaide , at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and at the Lutheran School of Theology ( Loyola University of Chicago ). In 1991 he received a Master of Arts in Religion. During his student years in Munich he received a scholarship from the Collegium Oecumenicum, an international Christian college.

After the vicariate (1993 to 1996) at the Johanneskirche in Coburg , he headed the Johann Hiltner student residence of the Protestant Alumneumsstiftung in Regensburg until 1998 . In 2000 he did his doctorate at the university there under Hans Schwarz in the subject of systematic theology with a thesis on Karl Heim (1874-1958) and then worked until 2004 as a research assistant at the chair for religious education and didactics of religious education.

In 2004 he completed his habilitation in the religious education department under Martin Bröking-Bortfeldt with an investigation into the history of Protestant religious education in Bavaria and has since been active in the training of religious teachers at the Institute for Protestant Theology at the University of Regensburg . In July 2011 he was appointed adjunct professor for at the chair for religious education and didactics of religious education. In March 2018 he was appointed visiting professor at Charles University in Prague by Rector Tomáš Zima .

Since 2015 he has been editor-in-chief of Confessio Augustana magazine . The Lutheran magazine for religion, society and culture , which is published by the Society for Inner and Outer Mission in the spirit of the Lutheran Church in Neuendettelsau .

Participation / membership in committees and associations

Thomas Kothmann has been officer of the German section of the International Loehe Society since 2011 , 2nd chairman of the Society for Inner and Outer Mission within the meaning of the Lutheran Church , member of the Karl Heim Society , the International Bonhoeffer Society, in the Society for Scientific Religious education, in the Association for Bavarian Church History and at 1. FC Nürnberg .

Awards

  • For the dissertation Apologetics and Mission. The missionary theology of Karl Heim as a contribution to a mission theology of the present , he was awarded the Johann Tobias Beck Prize in 2002.
  • In 2012, the Hussite Theological Faculty of Charles University in Prague awarded him the František Kovář (1888–1969) Medal of Merit for long-term cooperation in the annual German-Czech cooperation seminar.
  • 2018 appointment as visiting professor at the Charles University in Prague.
