The river in Manawatu Gorge

The Manawatu River , in the language of the Māori Manawatu written, is a river in the region Manawatu-Wanganui on the North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The name of the river will become of the Māori -Worten manawa (mind / heart) and TU have been formed (resting, dejected), which is roughly "resting fear Heart" or "broken spirit" would mean.

geography

The Manawatu River rises on the eastern flank of the Ruahine Range , around 1.4 km south of the Makaretu Hut (mountain hut ) and around 10 km northwest of Norsewood . With a length of 235 km, the river drains an area of 5898 km 2 on its way to the Tasman Sea , where it flows into the sea directly south of Foxton Beach .

From its headwaters, the river initially flows in an easterly direction, swings east of Norsewood in a south-westerly and south-westerly direction, passes the town of Dannevirke on its eastern side and changes direction to the west south of Woodville , to around 6.5 km long Manawatu Gorge between the Tararua Range in the south and the Ruahine Range in the north to traverse the north-east running mountain ranges. To the west of the gorge, the river swings to the southwest, after 10 km it passes Palmerston North on its southeast side, and then follows in a meandering shape in a large arc a path south from Foxton and Foxton Beach towards the Tasman Sea.

In addition to numerous streams, the Manawatu River counts the Mangatewainui River , Tamaki River , Pohangina River , Oroua River as its tributaries on its right side and the Tiraumea River , Mangatainoka River , Mangahao River , Tokomaru River on the left .

Floods

Since large parts of the catchment area of the Manawatu River consist of flat land and the numerous tributaries and streams supply large amounts of water to the Manawatu River when there is heavy rainfall, large areas of land are flooded in extreme weather situations with heavy rain. Floods are documented in 1880, 1897, 1902, 1953 and February 2004, when a storm over the North Island last led to the river's second highest flood and the highest since 1902. After eight dykes broke, over 200 houses were damaged by the flood and around 500 people had to be evacuated, the damage caused was estimated at NZ $ 112 million at the time  .

Environmental damage

In 2009 the river was certified to be one of the most polluted rivers in the western world , including New Zealand and Australia . The pollutants of the river were named as the sewage of the cities and communities on both sides of the river and its tributaries, the industrial sewage, the sediment- contaminated waters from overgrazing and erosion caused by the cultivation of areas as well as by overfertilization and animal faeces. In August 2010, the members of the Manawatū River Leaders' Forum signed an agreement with the aim of gradually improving the water quality of the river. The individual measures and progress in the process have since been documented on a separate website.
