Ashhurst's " Commercial Tavern " |
Ashhurst is a small, agricultural town in the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand . Administratively, the place belongs to the city of Palmerston North City .
Origin of name
Ashhurst was named after Lord Henry Ashhurst , who owned surrounding lands. He was one of the directors of the Emigrants 'and Colonists' Aid Corporation , which was founded in England in 1867 and operated the settlement of an area of 430 km² between the Manawatu River and the Rangitikei River , the so-called " Manchester Block ". The Māori name for the area is " Raukawa " after the name given to the aromatic plant Pseudopanax edgerleyi, which is native to the area .
geography
Ashhurst is about 14 km northeast of downtown Palmerston North on New Zealand State Highway 3 , which bends south of the town of Palmerston North to the east in the direction of Woodville , as does the Palmerston North – Gisborne Line , which runs parallel to the highway . The Pohangina River flows east of the village .
To the northeast of the village are the southern foothills of the Ruahine Range with the 920 m high Wharite Peak , on which there is a television and radio station. East of Ashhurst is a wind farm in the mountains.
