Main street in Taumarunui |
Taumarunui is a city in the Ruapehu District on the North Island of New Zealand . The city is the seat of the Ruapehu District Council .
Origin of name
The city's name is attributed to an event when the local Māori - Chief PEhi Taroa was dying and his last words to " taumaru nui " asked for shade from the sun. In the language of the Māori means " taumaru " as much as "somewhat protective against the sun" (today screen) and " nui " is "great" for.
geography
The city is located around 44 km west of Lake Taupo and around 52 km northwest of the Ruapehu volcano on the upper reaches of the Whanganui River .
history
The area around the confluence of the Ongarue River with the Whanganui River was already a preferred and important settlement area under the Māori and later a conveniently located junction for trade for Pākehā (white immigrants). In 1874 , Alexander Bell was the first European settler to set up a trading post at the site of what would later become Taumarunui . A street, Bell Road , was named after him in his honor.
After the formal end of the New Zealand Wars in 1881, the British crown made it possible to buy land in the Taumarunui area and most of the land sales took place between the early 1880s and the 1890s. In 1906 Taumarunui was upgraded to a borough and with the arrival of the railway line in 1908 the place experienced a steady upswing. But it was not until 1934 that the place aroused greater interest among European settlers. Until the construction of the railway, shipping on the Whanganui River was the only safe way of transporting goods of all kinds. At that time, tourists had the opportunity to take a three-day tour with a steamboat from Whanganui up the Whanganui River to Taumarunui . But the railroad and road connections to the place let this type of travel expire in 1934.
Population and economy
In the 2013 census, Die Stadt had 4503 inhabitants, 10.9% fewer than in the 2006 census.
