Transit New Zealand ( Māori : Ararau Aotearoa ) was a state-owned company in New Zealand with headquarters in Wellington , which was responsible for the national roads , the New Zealand State Highways .

history

The company was founded on October 1, 1989 under the Transit New Zealand Act 1989 as a Crown Entity and is under the Ministry of Transport .

The Transit New Zealand Authority , a body of Transit New Zealand , replaced the National Roads Board , which controlled the state highways . The National Roads Board, in turn, emerged from the Main Highways Board , which was founded on April 1, 1924. Not thinking of State Highways yet , but as early as 1924 it was the Board's task to advance the planning, conception and construction of a national network of long-distance roads.

Almost twenty years later, Land Transport New Zealand was transferred together with Transit New Zealand to the New Zealand Transport Agency , which was newly founded on August 1, 2008 .
