Land Transport New Zealand ( Land Transport NZ ), ( Māori : Ikiiki Whenua Aotearoa ), was a state-owned company in New Zealand based in Wellington . It was the company's task to plan, develop, expand and secure the traffic route system in New Zealand. In addition to the headquarters in Wellington , Land Transport NZ operated seven other offices in major cities across the country.

The company was founded in 2004 as a Crown Entity under the Land Transport Management Act 2003 and is under the Ministry of Transport . Four years later, Land Transport New Zealand was transferred together with Transit New Zealand to the New Zealand Transport Agency , which was newly founded on August 1, 2008 .

Land Transport NZ wanted to be an active link between the legislature and the operational transport sector and was responsible for:

  • Registration of vehicles for the private and commercial sector
  • Issuing driving licenses
  • Support from partners who took on tasks for Land Transport NZ
  • Guarantee of safe transport options and routes
  • Government support and advice
