Spanish chess championship
The Spanish Chess Championship ( Spanish Campeonato de España de Ajedrez) is an annual event organized by the Spanish Chess Federation (FEDA).
history
The first Spanish chess championship on the occasion of the majority of King Alfonso XIII. took place in Madrid from April 24 to May 20, 1902 . The round-robin tournament in the military casino Centro del Ejército y de la Armada won first lieutenant of the cavalry Manuel Golmayo , followed by Juan Sandón, Agustín Gómez and José Molina. In addition to the medal of the Spanish master, the winner received a prize from Queen Maria Christina . Golmayo repeated his success against Manuel Zaragoza in 1912 and in a tournament in 1921. The Spanish championship has been held annually since 1942. The game mode changed several times over the years. Between 1932 and 1943 a challenger was determined in national tournaments, who then played a match against the title holder. From 1944 onwards there were round tournaments before the Swiss system was used for the first time in 1971 . There was another innovation in 2001: the participants started in two groups of 6 players with a subsequent play-off. The knockout system was used in 2007 and 2008, and the Swiss system again since 2009. The title has been won eight times by Miguel Illescas , Antonio Medina and Arturo Pomar have each been successful seven times.
