The Inangahua River is a river on the South Island of New Zealand . It is considered to be the largest tributary of the Buller River .
The Inangahua initially flows 35 km northwest, then north through the village of Reefton . From here the river continues for 30 km. It flows into the Buller River at the community of Inangahua Junction , about 40 km from its confluence with the Tasman Sea at Westport .
The Reefton Power Station , the first hydropower station in the southern hemisphere to supply the public with electricity and only preserved in ruins, was operated via tunnels and a canal with water from the river.
The river is a popular area for white water kayaking and fishing.
