Inangahua Junction is a small settlement in the Buller District of the West Coast regionon the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The place name refers to the word inanga , in the Māori language for edible juvenile fish from some types of galaxies . Previously, Inangahua Junction as Christie Junction known.

geography

The settlement is located at the confluence of the Inangahua River with the Buller River , 34 km north of Reefton and 46 km southeast of Westport . Murchison is 52 km to the east.

population

In the 2013 census, the town had 144 inhabitants, 10.4% less than in the 2006 census.

economy

The main industries are forestry, coal mining, farming and sawmills. The place has shops, a fire department and an earthquake museum. South of Inangahua , the two-day music festival “ PHAT ” takes place on private property at the turn of the year, and is attended by around 5000 guests. A smaller one-day festival " PHAT MOON " takes place at Easter.

Inangahua earthquake

On May 24, 1968 at 5:24 a.m., the settlement was shaken by a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1  M W. a. caused numerous landslides. The population was temporarily evacuated. Three people were killed and another three died when a helicopter crashed during the evacuation.

The place is at the junction of the New Zealand State Highway 69 from the New Zealand State Highway 6 .

Rail transport

Inangahua Junction is on the Stillwater-Westport Line railroad . In 1914 the railway line from Cronadun to Inangahua Junction was opened, but further construction through the Buller River canyon was slow. In July 1942, the first trains began to operate the entire route between Stillwater and Westport . The official opening took place on December 5, 1943. Then a passenger service was set up with the " Vulcan " railcars of the RM class , which in Stillwater was connected to trains that ran on the Midland Line between Greymouth and Christchurch . In 1967, passenger traffic was discontinued, and since then the route has mainly been used for coal transports.

Education

The Inangahua Junction School is a coeducational primary school for the 1st to 6th grade with 14 students and a decile rating of 6 in 2011. The school already existed in 1887.

The former Inangahua College merged in 2004 with the school in Reefton to form the " Reefton Area School ". The College, formerly Reefton District High School , ran for 38 years.
