The canton of Chocaya is a municipality in the Potosí department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
The canton (Bolivian: cantón ) Chocaya is one of nine cantons in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Atocha in the province of Sur Chichas . It borders in the north on the province of Nor Chichas , in the northwest on the province Antonio Quijarro , in the west on the province Nor Lípez , in the south and southeast on the canton Tacmari , and in the east on the canton Atocha .
The central place of the canton is Chocaya (more precisely: Gran Chocaya ) with 79 inhabitants ( 2001 census ) in the central part of the district, larger towns are the two mining settlements of Siete Suyos with 1,117 inhabitants and Animas with 1,025 inhabitants northeast of Gran Chocaya. The mean height of the canton is 4200 m , the mountain peaks - especially in the eastern part of the canton - reach heights of up to 4,500 m.

The canton of Chocaya is located on the Bolivian Altiplano in the northern foothills of the Andean mountain range of the Cordillera de Lípez , about 90 kilometers southeast of the Salar de Uyuni salt lake . The climate of the region is arid and has a clear time-of-day climate, in which the mean daily temperature fluctuations are greater than the temperature fluctuations over the course of the year.
The mean annual temperature of the region is around 7 ° C due to the altitude, at least 4 ° C lower than in neighboring Atocha (see climate diagram Atocha), with a monthly average of 2 ° C in June / July and 9 ° C from November to March. The annual precipitation is a low 200 mm, with the months April to October being almost free of precipitation. Significant precipitation falls only from November to March, with a maximum of around 50 mm monthly precipitation in January.

The population in the canton has increased by more than half in the last decade of the last century:

The population density of the Municipio Atocha at the 2001 census was 4.6 inhabitants / km², the life expectancy of newborns was 56 years.
The literacy rate among the over 19-year-olds in the municipality was 85 percent, namely 95 percent for men and 86 percent for women. ( 2001 )
Due to the historically grown population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Quechua population, in the municipality of Atocha 70% of the population speak the Quechua language .
