Atocha is a town in the Potosí department in the highlands of the Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
Atocha is the central place of the Municipio Atocha in the province of Sur Chichas and is located at an altitude of 3656 m on the hardly used railway line between Oruro and Uyuni in the north and Tupiza in the south. The village is located at the mouth of the Río Allyta ( also : Allita) in the Río Atocha , which flows northeast on the northern edge of the village and flows downstream into the Río Cotagaita .

Atocha is located on the Bolivian Altiplano in the northern foothills of the Andes mountain range of the Cordillera de Lípez . The climate of the region is arid and has a clear time-of-day climate, in which the daily temperature fluctuations are greater than the temperature fluctuations over the course of the year.
The mean annual temperature of the region is 11 ° C (see Atocha climate diagram), with a monthly average of 6–7 ° C in June / July and 13–14 ° C from November to March. The annual precipitation is a low 200 mm, with the months April to October being almost free of precipitation. Significant precipitation falls only from November to March, with a maximum of around 50 mm monthly precipitation in January.
Transport network
Atocha is 304 kilometers by road southwest of Potosí , the capital of the department.
From Potosí, the national national road Ruta 5 leads in a south-westerly direction for 208 kilometers to Uyuni at the Salar de Uyuni salt lake . The city of Uyuni is connected to the city of Tupiza by the 197 kilometers long Ruta 21 , which runs about halfway through Atocha .

Due to the historically grown population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Quechua population, in the municipality of Atocha 60.1 percent of the population speak the Quechua language.
