The municipality of Atocha is a district in the Potosí department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

The municipality of Atocha is one of two municipalities in the province of Sur Chichas and is located in the northern part of the province. It borders in the northwest with the province of Nor Chichas , in the northwest with the province Antonio Quijarro , in the west with the province Nor Lípez , and in the south and east with the municipality Tupiza . It extends for 75 kilometers in an east-west direction and 65 kilometers in a north-south direction.

The central place of the municipality is the small town of Atocha with 2,240 inhabitants ( 2012 census ) on the northern edge of the district.

The municipality of Atocha is located on the Bolivian Altiplano in the northern foothills of the Andes mountain range of the Cordillera de Lípez . The climate of the region is arid and has a clear time-of-day climate, in which the daily temperature fluctuations are greater than the temperature fluctuations over the course of the year.
