Santa Bárbara (also: Chorolque ) is a country town in the Potosí department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
location
Santa Bárbara is the most populous city in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Atocha in the province of Sur Chichas , by more than 500 inhabitants before the provincial capital Atocha . The city lies at an altitude of 4774 m at the foot of the Cerro Chorolque , a 5552 m high mountain that is rich in ore deposits of tin , bismuth , silver , gold and copper and is exploited from different sides by the "Chorolque" mine.

Santa Bárbara is located on the Bolivian Altiplano in the northern foothills of the Andean mountain range of the Cordillera de Lípez . The climate in this region is semi-arid and characterized by a clear daytime climate.
The mean average temperature of the region is about 5 ° C (see climate diagram Santa Bárbara) and fluctuates only slightly between 0 ° C in July and 7–8 ° C from November to March. The annual precipitation is low 220 mm, whereby the months April to October are almost free of precipitation. Significant precipitation falls only from November to March, with a maximum of 50 to 60 mm monthly precipitation in January and February.

Santa Bárbara is 334 kilometers by road south of Potosí , the capital of the department of the same name.
From Potosí, the Ruta 5 trunk road leads 208 kilometers in a south-westerly direction to Uyuni , and from there Ruta 21 for a further 96 kilometers in a south-east direction to Atocha. Four kilometers south of Atocha, a dirt road branches off in an easterly direction, the end point of which after 26 kilometers is the city of Santa Bárbara and Cerro Chorolque.

Due to the historically grown population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Quechua population, in the municipality of Atocha 60.1 percent of the population speak the Quechua language.
