economy

Between 1972 and 1980 a bismuth smelter worked in Telamayu but had to cease operations due to economic difficulties. The current Bolivian government invested a sum of 1 million US dollars in November 2008 to restart the work of the smelter, although there are great doubts about the smelter's economic viability.
Bismuth is used for metal alloys, more recently also as a substitute for lead, bismuth components are used in the cosmetics and medical industries. The bismuth used in the Telamayu hut has a purity of 99 percent and is mainly exported to Russia .
