The Maruia River is a river in the northwest in the region Tasman on the South Island of New Zealand . It is an important tributary of the Buller River and runs for 80 km, then flows into the Buller River 8 km west of Murchison .

The Maruia River rises from the Spenser Mountains and runs first in a south-westerly direction, then it swings north for the last 50 km of its course. Its upper course forms the western access to the Lewis Pass , the northernmost of the three passes over the Southern Alps . There are thermal springs in the area of the upper reaches . The seaside resort of Maruia Springs is five kilometers west of Lewis Pass, 50 kilometers southeast of Reefton .

The Maruia Falls are located on the lower reaches of the Maruia, 22 kilometers south of Murchison . These were created in 1929 by an earthquake that lowered the lower course of the river here one meter. Due to erosion and settlement of the soil, the fall is around 10 m high today.

The State Highway 65 follows up on a short deviation to the west at Burnbrae the river. The SH 7 also uses its valley from Springs Junction towards Lewis Pass. Places along the river are from south to north: Maruia Springs, Springs Junction, Maruia , Warwikc Junction , Paenga , Minehaha , Shenandoah , Glengarry and Ariki .
